Project Profile – Worsley Alumina Plant Expansion

In 1982, when initial construction of the Worsley Alumina Plant began near Collie, Western Australia, CB&I was one of the major contractors involved. Over the years, we worked on a number of other projects at the plant, so when Worsley initiated a major expansion project, we were already familiar with the plant and its operations.

Worsley contracted us to start onsite construction on the "Stretch" project, increasing the interim plant capacity through tank and piping upgrades and building a new hydrate classification unit. Onsite, we fabricated and erected 20 precipitators and five other process vessels. We also constructed a number of process modules offsite in Kwinana to improve the project schedule. At project completion, we had installed more than 125 pieces of major equipment and completed more than 1,500 piping tie-ins to existing plant systems.
