Flat-Bottom Tanks for Low Temperature and Cryogenic Storage  

CB&I has designed and built refrigerated and cryogenic storage systems for liquefied gases for nearly 50 years. Over the years, we've delivered nearly 1,000 refrigerated storage tanks and spheres and more than 150 turnkey design-build liquefied gas storage terminals around the globe.

Low temperature tanks can store products at temperatures as low as -60°F (-51°C); cryogenic systems store liquids at temperatures as low as -452°F (-268°C). We provide low temperature and cryogenic storage tanks for the entire range of liquefied gases including butadiene, butane, ammonia, chlorine, propane, propylene, carbon dioxide, LNG, LPG, ethylene, oxygen, argon, nitrogen and hydrogen.

Providing added value. We execute our storage tank projects on a lump-sum, turnkey basis, performing every phase of the project with our in-house resources and providing a single point of contact for our customers. This true EPC approach is possible because we have a vast global network of engineering, procurement, fabrication and construction resources that allow us to quickly mobilize people, material and equipment wherever they are needed.

Our integrated business model translates into shorter project schedules, lower costs, improved quality control and reduced risk for the customer. Our clients can focus on their core business operations instead of worrying about the inevitable work overlaps, delays and inefficiencies that occur when multiple contractors are involved.

Scope and expertise. The scope of our refrigerated and cryogenic storage projects typically includes concept definition, design and detail engineering, specification and procurement, shop fabrication, field construction, inspection and testing, startup and project management. Our projects have ranged from designing and building individual tanks and refrigerated process systems to entire storage terminals.

In developing these projects, we draw upon our extensive knowledge of steel structure design, fabrication, welding, thermodynamics and the physical properties of gases, fluid flow, heat transfer and chemical engineering. Tanks and their insulation systems must work together to ensure optimum performance for low temperature and cryogenic storage. Our tanks are available in three types of shell and insulation systems:

  • Single wall steel tanks - This type of tank normally is used to store products at -60ºF (-51ºC) and warmer. Our single wall tank is insulated with rigid polyurethane insulation foamed-in-place between the steel shell and an aluminum jacket that serves as both a moisture vapor barrier and provides weather protection. This system offers good resistance to severe weather and fire. Its excellent vapor barrier reduces heat leakage, thus lowering operating costs.
  • Double wall steel tanks - These tanks normally store products at -28ºF (-33ºC) and colder. Our double wall steel tanks provide the best possible insulation and offer excellent fire resistance, wind protection and vapor barrier integrity.
  • Composite concrete and steel tanks - Composite tanks feature concrete outer shells that provide additional protection against damage and offer containment in the unlikely event of tank leakage. Used most often for storing LNG, these tanks can be designed with several foundation, shell and containment configurations.

The North Bontang ammonia export terminal in East Kalimantan, Indonesia was an engineering, procurement, and construction turnkey project for refrigerated ammonia storage.

  • 50,000 metric ton (55,120 ton) double integrity ammonia storage tank
  • 83.3 metric ton/hr (91.8 ton/hr) receiving rate
  • 800 metric ton/hr (881.8 ton/hr) sendout rate from storage to ship
