CB&I was awarded a contract with the City of Ripon, California to design, fabricate, construct and coat  a 2.5 million gallon Hydropillar® located in the middle of the City’s new Mistlin Sports Complex. The Hydropillar would be the second Hydropillar  built by CB&I in Ripon.  In 2002, CB&I constructed a 1.5 million gallon Hydropillar for the City.  These tanks are two of only four Hydropillars in the state of California.

Working in California brings the challenge of being prepared for earthquakes. The structure was designed to seismic zone 3 and also to withstand 100 mile per hour winds.  Also the project included the design and installation of  an elevator on the tank interior that proved to be a significant challenge as the code requirements were extensive.  Construction  of the tank foundation, elevator foundation and the elevator shaft were also formidable tasks as  it involved approximately 1,200 cubic yards of concrete to support more than 20 million pounds of water. The Hydropillar has four interior concrete floors with the ground floor built out into 3 separate concession stand rooms and a maintenance/backup generator room.  Two exterior observation balconies provide the public with a panoramic view of the fields and they are accessed by spiral stairways.

The Mistlin Sports Complex houses  12  soccer fields, two baseball fields, batting cages, four softball fields and playgrounds. The exterior graphics enhancing the tank included the City of Ripon Logo, various sports themes, and a roof that was painted to resemble a soccer ball. This structure was named the 2007 Tank of the Year in the elevated steel tank category by the Steel Tank Institute / Steel Plate Fabricators Association.
