The City of Darien, Illinois, selected CB&I to provide a steel standpipe. CB&I was responsible for the engineering, fabrication, and construction of the standpipe. The standpipe has an overall height of 153.7 feet, a diameter of 44 feet, and a capacity of 1.5 million gallons. The standpipe is composed of more than 350,000 pounds of steel.

This unique standpipe was built to look like a working lighthouse. Architectural enhancements included a unique coned roof, five pilasters, two balconies and 10 three-dimensional simulated and machined windows (approximately 5 feet x 7 feet). The dual functioning balconies and pilasters both support and hide numerous cell antennas and associated cables to provide additional income for the city.

Due to the extremely tight site, the tank was built entirely from the ground level by starting with the roof and jacking each shell ring into place. Balconies and pilasters were attached as the tank was jacked up. Materials were staged as needed due to lack of lay down space.  This structure was named the 2007 Tank of the Year in the standpipe steel tank category by the Steel Tank Institute / Steel Plate Fabricators Association.
