Styrene/Polystyrene

Lummus Technology provides a full line of advanced styrene and polystyrene process technologies. Lummus is the only company to offer technologies for vertical process integration, from ethylene through ethylbenzene, styrene and polystyrene. These technologies are supported by our unique alliances and partnerships with major engineering and operating companies and catalyst manufacturers, as well as our own extensive research and development programs.

Phenolics

Lummus Technology markets Polimeri Europa's proven technologies for the production of cumene and phenol. The cumene process uses Polimeri's highly active, selective, and robust PBE-1 zeolite catalyst for the alkylation of benzene with propylene. The phenol process offers greater safety, higher yields, and better operability than competing processes.

Light Hydrocarbons

Dehydrogenation of C3-C5 Olefins
The CATOFIN® dehydrogenation process, offered by Lummus, is a commercially proven fixed bed process for the production of light olefins from propane, isobutane or isopentane. Utilizing recently enhanced catalyst technology, the CATOFIN process achieves the highest selectivity and conversion available for light paraffin dehydrogenation.

Butadiene Extraction
The BASF butadiene extraction process utilizes two-stage extractive distillation to recover 1,3 butadiene (>99.7% pure) from mixed C4 feed streams using n-methyl-pyrrolidone (NMP) solvent and conventional distillation technology. As well as being nontoxic and noncarcinogenic, NMP is noncorrosive, allowing for carbon steel construction and therefore lower investment cost. Solvent consumption is low because of NMP's high boiling point and stability against hydrolysis and thermal decomposition.

Benzene via Hydrodealklylation
The DETOL®, LITOL® and PYROTOL® hydrodealkylation processes convert alkylated aromatics into high purity (99.95%) benzene. Feeds can be toluene, coal gas condensate or pyrolysis gasoline. The processes balance the hydrodealkylation, desulfurization and hydrocracking reactions required to optimize benzene production from each feed.

Specialty Chemicals

Dimethyl Carbonate/Diphenyl Carbonate
Lummus Technology offers the phosgene-free Polimeri/Lummus processes for the production of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) and diphenyl carbonate (DPC). The environmentally safe Polimeri/Lummus DMC process uses CO, methanol, and O2 to produce high-purity DMC, CO2, and water and can be applied to large capacity plants of up to 50 kta per train. The Polimeri/Lummus DPC process reacts DMC with phenol to produce high quality DPC and methanol (which can be recycled back to the DMC process). There are opportunities for energy integration as well when both plants are built together.

Maleic Anhydride
Lummus Technology offers ALMA maleic anhydride, jointly developed by Lummus and Lonza SpA – an advanced and economical technology for the production of maleic anhydride from n-butane. It combines the unique features of a fluid-bed reactor and a nonaqueous recovery system to produce the highest purity (99.9 wt %) maleic anhydride product currently achievable. Recent improvements in catalyst formulation and cyclone design have increased yield and improved unit operability.
