Styrenics/Phenolics/Carbonates Production

CB&I offers the reliable CB&I/UOP EBOne™ ethylbenzene (EB) and "Classic" styrene monomer (SM) technologies. The fixed-bed, liquid-phase EBOne process uses a zeolite catalyst that provides high yields and high-selectivity, practically eliminating xylene formation (an impurity that reduces SM quality downstream). The "Classic" SM process features a deep vacuum EB dehydrogenation reaction system.

CB&I offers the proven and innovative Versalis/CB&I technologies for the production of cumene and phenol. The cumene process uses Versalis' highly-active, selective and robust PBE-1 zeolite catalyst for the alkylation of benzene with propylene to produce high purity cumene.

The phenol process is based on the oxidation of cumene to cumene hydroperoxide and its subsequent decomposition to phenol and acetone, which offers greater safety, higher yields and better operability than competing processes.

CB&I offers the phosgene-free Versalis/CB&I processes for the production of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) and diphenyl carbonate (DPC). DMC is an intermediate used in polycarbonates (via DPC), lubricants, solvents, fuel additives and other products. DPC is used to make polycarbonates.

Ethylbenzene

The Lummus/UOP EBOne™ ethylbenzene technology has earned the reputation for being one of the most modern, efficient and reliable processes for the production of intermediate ethylbenzene (EB).

Styrene Monomer

The Lummus/UOP CLASSIC SM technology has earned the reputation for being one of the most modern, efficient and reliable processes for the production of styrene monomer (SM).

Cumene

The Versalis/CB&I cumene process produces cumene by alkylation of benzene with propylene. It is based on Versalis’ proprietary zeolite catalyst PBE-1, which has been used in commercial operation since the late 1990s.

Phenol/Acetone

The Versalis/CB&I phenol process utilizes advanced technology for the air oxidation of cumene followed by acid-catalyzed decomposition to phenol and acetone. This state-of-the-art technology minimizes heavy by-product formation and maximizes conversion, which improves overall yield while providing smooth, reliable and safe operation.

Acetone Hydrogenation to Isopropyl Alcohol

The Versalis/CB&I Isopropanol process produces isopropanol (IPA) by a two step process: hydrogenation of acetone to IPA, followed by distillation of the raw IPA to produce a high purity product.

Dimethyl Carbonate

The Versalis/CB&I dimethyl carbonate (DMC) process produces dimethyl carbonate by the oxidative carbonylation of methanol. It avoids the safety and waste product issues associated with conventional phosgene-based DMC processes.

Diphenyl Carbonate

The Versalis/CB&I diphenyl carbonate (DPC) process produces diphenyl carbonate by reacting dimethyl carbonate with phenol. By-product methanol can be recycled to upstream dimethyl carbonate production. There are no environmental or corrosion issues.
